Each vintage RV awning has a vinyl welt that slides into a c-channel awning rail with a 3/8" diameter. The vintage trailer awnings have 8" scalloped valances on three sides. Matching custom made edge binding is on the scalloped valances, and there are facings on the underside for added structure and reinforcement for the brass grommets. The fabric is resistant to rain, stain, mildew, tears, rot and fading, plus provides UV protection while allowing for comfortable airflow. The fabric is equally vibrant on both sides and folds easily for storage and will not crack along fold lines like vinyl. Here We Go Again-Vintage Trailer Awnings Everywhere!

As promised, I have been using up my existing Sunbrella marine grade awning fabric inventory and preparing room for my next shipment of awning fabric for Spring. I did purchase one roll recently, for those of you who keep asking for a blue and yellow pattern for a vintage trailer awning. Notice it in the foreground of the second picture. The temperature here in Georgia has remained moderate, allowing me to continue sewing vintage trailer awnings in my basement workshop. This past Fall, I concentrated on "Earthy "colors for awnings, so I decided to brighten the Spring selection up a bit. I will post the new patterns as they arrive. Expect to see shades of yellow from pale to bright, and shades of green from lime to light!

TAC The Airstream Club Rally at Stone Mountain Park in Georgia April 27-29, 2012

John has asked me to help promote the TAC Rally for Spring of 2012. In order to preserve the $49.00 special rally rate, free entrance to the park instead of $10.00 per car fee, plus a second day Adventure pass free with the purchase of the one day pass, we need to make our reservations soon. Stone Mountain has saved a group of 30 purple premium sites for us, but can only hold them for so long. March 21,2012 is the date when they will release the sites to the general public. The phone number is 770-498-5710 and ask for Darlene. http://hfeimages.aristotle.net/General/SMP/Maps%20-%20Campground%202011REV.pdf The purple premium loop encircling the playground, swimming pool, volleyball court, horseshoe pits, and LeWallen pavilion, usually costs $57.00 per site. Water, electric, sewer, cable, WIFI, picnic table, grill and firepit are all included in the price. Special activities are scheduled for the campers that change throughout the year. A Shuttle from the campground to the Laser Show will be available. A Non Denominational Church Service at 9:00-10:00 on Sunday at the LeWallen Pavillion will also be available.

With the price of gas so high and going up, this close to home rally sounds ideal. Even though the sites are higher than we are accustomed to, we'll save on travel time, gas, meals while traveling and only book two nights instead of three. 30 sites were reserved for this gathering,so there is still space available for more Shastas, if you want to join in the fun. RALLY TIME AT STONE MOUNTAIN PARK: Come and enjoy a true family adventure at Stone Mountain Park located in Atlanta, Georgia to be held April 27-29, 2012. What awaits you are rally reserved super premium RV sites, some even come with private decks and cooking grill. All the super premium sites are arranged around the playground, pool, volleyball court and large group pavilion. Propane is available on site and a small provisions store has some basic necessities. Schedule of Activities:

For those arriving on Thursday let's plan on a climb the rock right after lunch. Then you have the option of climbing back down the rock or taking the cable car down and walking back to your vehicle. The rock is easy to climb, just a scramble but wear good shoes and take some water. Later that afternoon there will be an easy paddle around Stone Mt. Lake for those who have kayaks or canoes. We will just meander around looking at whatever there is to see. Make sure you have and use your personal flotation device (PFD) and other safety equipment.

Confirmed that the Pavilion, in our reserved loop, is available for our use at these times.The pavilion is open air, seats 200 people, has plenty of electrical outlets but no bathrooms. The centrally located loop bathhouse, will have to do.

Activities for Friday= Meet and Greet at the Picnic Pavilion at 6:00 PM and bring an Appetizer to share plus bring your own drinks.The Airstream Rock Band Members might be playing afterwards.
Activities for Saturday= Covered Dish Pot-Luck Dinner at the Pavilion at 4:00 PM. The laser show starts at 9:00 PM with a shuttle bus provided from the campground.
Sunday= Nondenominational Church service at the Picnic Pavilion followed by Brunch. Bring a Breakfast type item to share.Times will be posted once we know the anticipated church service length. Service 9:00 AM -10:00 AM Brunch at 10:30 AM. Even though the check out time is 12:00, I was assured we would not be rushed and can take the necessary time to enjoy our brunch.

Update: The $10.00 gate entrance fee has now been waved for your first vehicle, but not for your second vehicle if arriving separately. It will be a one time fee for the entire stay of the second vehicle at the campground. Check in time for your campsite is 2:00 PM, however check with the office because if the site is unoccupied you can arrive earlier.

On the day of arrival, have a card printed with your Forum name displayed in the corner of the driver's side windshield. This will notify the park entrance gate employee to wave your $10.00 gate fee. Once you register at the campground, they will give you an official tag to be used for the rest of your stay.

This was an amazing group of campers. It is safe to assume that everyone, from infants to grandparents, had a fabulous time at this gathering. From the Friday "Meet and Greet" until the closing Sunday brunch friendships were made. We all had so many interests in common; love of camping, great food, family, pets, antiques, flamingos, vintage cars, photography, art, restoration, just to name a few. Each social activity was well attended by over 20 or so participants. A big thank you to everyone for helping to make this a weekend to remember. Lets do it again.

Forest Green Regimental Vintage Trailer Awning in Progress

Today I am working on a custom vintage trailer awning that is 12' x 8', made from Sunbrella marine grade fabric # 4963 which is Forest Green Regimental. I will soon be making another rope and pole awning out of the remaining Forest Green Regimental fabric that will be approximately 10' x 9'. Also in progress is a 7'6" x 9' vintage camper awning made from Sunbrella # 4956, which is Heather Beige 6 Bar. Putty Regimental # 4961 is also started, for a vintage RV awning that is approximately 9' x 8'. I will continue to make as many random sized vintage trailer awnings as I can until it gets close to the Holidays or too cold in my workshop basement, which ever comes first! I have one more local vintage trailer rally to attend the first weekend in
November. This has been my busiest awning season so far, with a total of 44 custom awnings and 9 window awnings. I will be seeking out more Sunbrella fabric for the Spring 2012 camping season. dfoster@bellsouth.net

Forest Green Regimental and Happy Halloween Hat

We just returned from a camping trip to James Island County Park Campground near Charleston, SC. We have a great time everytime we stay there. It is very convenient to downtown Charleston and close to Folly Beach, which is dog friendly. Actually, you don't even need to leave the park to be totally content. Dutch Puppy loves the dog park on the lake and just relaxing by the campfire. We were glad that the predicted 8 inches of rain and high winds only turned into a couple of heavy drenchers with sunshine popping out in between downpours.

Southern Appalachian Tearjerkers Rally at Devil's Fork State Park in Salem, SC

We attended out first Tearjerkers Rally this past weekend at Devil's Fork Campground in SC. We met attendees from the Georgia and Southern Appalachian Chapters of Tearjerkers. I attempted to take pictures of everyone's trailers, but my camera batteries died! If I missed a few, I apologize. The Pot-Luck social on Saturday night had plenty of great food and fellowship. We unfortunately arrived late on Friday night and missed some of the other planned activities. As usual, we were in our vintage 1968 Avion, but there were Shastas, a Scotty, a tiny pop-up tent trailer, an Itsy bitsy trailer pulled behind a motorcycle and a wide assortment of amazing teardrop type trailers. We felt welcomed and had a wonderful time.

American Made Vintage Trailer Awning Displayed on a Shasta

Over this Labor Day weekend, another American made vintage trailer awning was proudly displayed on a Shasta. The products used in the constuction of my rope and pole awnings are made in America; marine grade Sunbrella fabric is made in the USA, along with the #69 nylon weatherproof thread, and the 1/2" solid brass General grommets. The awning is even sewn together using a vintage Singer Rocketeer, also known as Slant-o-matic sewing machine, which was once proudly made in the USA. McKinney Army Corp of Engineers on Lake Allatoona in Georgia

The first weekend of November 2011 a rally is being organized at McKinney Campground in Georgia, on Lake Allatoona. So far the vintage Shastas have reserved most of the sites in loop 87-92 plus 93, 94, 95, 96, 97, 99,100. Airstreams have reserved sites 98-104 plus 112. Expanding into loop 105-117 . It is only a month away now, so don't delay, get your reservations made today.

Thursday arrivals: No organized group activities are planned. A suggestion is to visit the Booth Western Museum in Cartersville.
Friday at 6:00 PM a Meet and Greet appetizer social is planned at site 101. Bring a finger food appetizer to share, a camp chair, and a flashlite or lantern. We will be the flashlight brigade to help guide late comers into their campsites in the dark.(Shasta and Airstream groups are both invited)
Saturday at 10:00-11:30 AM will be the combined Tour of Trailers for Shasta and Airstreams. Saturday at 12:00 Noon is the Pot-Luck Lunch at site 86 for the Airstream group. Again, bring a chair and a covered dish to share. Enjoy the afternoon and evening with your family. The Shasta group is having their Pot-Luck around 5:30 PM at a different location.
Sunday Brunch, for the Airstream group, is back at the more centrally located site 101 at 10:00 AM. Check out isn't until 3:00, so come enjoy a shared Brunch before you pack up to head back home.

Pull Through site 86 for my 1968 Avion

Loop 93-104

Loop 93-104 at McKinney Army Corps of Engineers Campground on lake Allatoona is now filling up with Airstream reservations for the first weekend in November 2011. A 59 Airstream has reserved site 101, site 102 is a 1998 Excella turned into a bunkhouse, Site 98 a 2008 Safari, plus 103 & 104 are reserved for a 1995 Land Yacht. We will expand into another loop at sites 105-117 as necessary. 112 reserved AS.

Loop 86-92 is the Vintage Shasta Rally. However, I will be slightly off of their loop on the pull through site 86 in my 1968 Avion. Sites 93,94, 95, 96, 97, 99, 100 are also reserved Shasta.

If there is enough interest, this may grow into something bigger but for now it is mostly local folks just getting together for some camping fun.

Be mindful of the 4:00 check in time and also of the entry gate lock time.

Oct 1 - March 31: the gate is open from 9 AM until 9 PM.

There is an attendant on duty when the gate is open. Check in time is 4 PM (or later, but not earlier). Check out time is 3 PM.

Bring an UGLY Sweater for the Ugliest sweater contest.Wear it to the Friday 6:00 PM meet and greet social on site 101. Bring an appetizer type finger food to share, a chair to sit in, a flashlight or lantern. We will help guide late comers into their campsites as they arrive in the dark.

Also bring a swimsuit for the Polar Bear Swim, or just your camera if you are not brave or crazy enough! Saturday afternoon at the designated beach area, if it happens to be warm enough.

If your four legged friends are coming along, bring outfits for them to wear during the Tour Of Trailers 10:00- 11:30 on Saturday AM.

"Bring A Book-Take A Book" table, so bring a hard cover book you have read and enjoyed to trade in on another. Book table at site 86. Also pick up your "Tour of Trailers" participating tag and schedule of activities sheet.

A "Tour of Trailers" from 10:00-11:30 AM Saturday followed by the Airstream Pot-Luck on site 86 at Noon.The Shasta Pot-Luck is at 5:30 PM at another location.

Plan a hot covered dish, some type of salad or a dessert for the Pot-Luck .

Sunday at 10:00 AM on site 101 is the Airstream Sunday Brunch. Bring something to share and a chair. Check out isn't until 3:00 PM, so come to brunch before you pack up to head home.

Simple Measures To Prepare Your Awning for Stormy Weather

The Dog Days Of Summer are upon us, here in Georgia.The stifling, oppressive, heat is almost unbearable. Every afternoon, severe thunderstorms pummel us with hail, drench us with rain, petrify us with cloud to ground lightning, and blast us with 60 mile per hour down bursts or straight line winds. It's a daily routine picking up tree limbs, twigs and branches full of leaves; yet we remain thankful that one,of our many trees, didn't blow over onto our house. As long as the power stays on I keep sewing away, making vintage trailer awnings in the safety of my basement. dfoster@bellsouth.net

Let me share with you, how to prepare your vintage trailer awning for stormy weather. We added medium weight springs and a pulley to each of our tie-down lines. We also Tee-Pee our adjustable height tent poles for rain run off. If you have more than three tent poles, graduate the height of the poles from highest to lowest to achieve rain run off. These few simple measures will help prepare your vintage trailer awning for those unexpected wind gusts or a full- fledged storm.

What Vintage Trailer Awning Am I Working On Today?

Today I am working on a Plum Fancy 15' x 8' vintage trailer awning for an Airstream. I also have four other vintage camper awnings in different stages of production. My dining room has turned into an awning fabric disaster zone. Keep in mind, my actual workshop is in the basement! Now you can actually see why I say, "Do not procrastinate about ordering a vintage RV awning".
I should know, in a couple of days, some of the new patterns numbers that will be available for custom awning orders.
It must be disappointing to find out that I have just run out of fabric and that I also have a long waiting list for awning orders, especially when you have just found my Blog. Please check back in a few days.

Each year the abundance of Spring camping rallies scheduled, all across the country, always brings on a frantic rush for vintage trailer awnings. As usual, now that Summer is upon us, I find that another extremely busy awning season has depleted my inventory and reduced the entire fabric selection down to a few patterns with limited yardage. My vintage camper awning fabric selection has dwindled down to the patterns shown above. TAC The Airstream Club Rally May 2011

Roosevelt State Park in Pine Mountain, Georgia was where TAC members congregated, in area five's picnic pavilion each night at 5:30 PM, for appetizers and socializing. Callaway Gardens was nearby, http://www.callawaygardens.com/gardens/georgia-gardens.aspx , but they were hosting a special water skiing event for the Memorial Day weekend. So most of us found other sources of camping entertainment. Several families did venture out to Wild Animal Safari http://www.animalsafari.com/safari/ for a face licking good time! Some folks hiked the Pine Mountain trails, while others rode their bikes or scooters around the campground. Relaxing with a good book and dabbling in water colors, was what I chose to do. One day I gave a quick,sewing session, lesson, for making vintage trailer awnings. Quite a few campers brought along their pets, so doggie walks led to socializing, picture taking, and tours of trailers. Several evenings, marshmallows were roasted over campfires, and movies were projected on the side of an Airstream. The vintage trailer group, on the bottom of the loop, got together several mornings for breakfast; eating waffles, pancakes, bacon and other deliciously fattening fare! Quite a few children, ages ranging from 4-11, kept us all entertained with their bug and frog catching, chalk drawings, blueberry gathering and their observations of the bats nesting in the rafters of the picnic pavilion. Through word of mouth, chalk messages in the road pointing the way, and the original Rally plan set out on the Forum, we managed to have a great time. We were welcomed home from our camping trip by our neighbor, who proceeded to tell us that a 100 foot tall Tulip Poplar tree, in the woods behind our house, blew over onto the back fence of a house in the nest subdivision. http://www.briartech.com/latespring/tulip/ptulip.htm Oh joy!! State Farm informed us that it is each homeowners own responsibility to clean up their own property. My husband insisted that we clean up their yard and repair their fence as a good will gesture. So I am out in the tick invested woods, in the poison Ivy being a good citizen! Vintage Trailer Window Awnings New for 2011

I have been experimenting with clip on window awnings for vintage Hehr standard awning windows, and their louvered windows too. The 1966, 1967, and 1968 Airstream frame less Awning Windows, with the 3/16" glass thickness, I am trying this prototype out on also. It will be nice to be able to offer a vintage trailer window awning option, that doesn't require screw in snaps that alter your vintage window frames, or any external hardware that requires screws being placed into your vintage trailer's exterior.

It appears that quite a variety of vintage canned hams and vintage travel trailers, besides vintage Airstream trailers, have crank out louvered windows.

Custom vintage trailer window awnings will not only give your vintage camper a unique appearance, they also have the potential to cut down on UV rays, sunshine glare, fading, and heat build up during the day plus convert to room darkening shades by night.

The Christmas Fairy has granted one Christmas Vintage Trailer Awning Wish this year. So for that one special, lucky, person, I reopened my little awning workshop. I put on a warm hooded sweatshirt, kid gloves and set a space heater next to my sewing machine. So like a happy, little, Christmas Elf, I have been working away, listening to Christmas Carols on the radio, making a vintage style rope and pole trailer awning for an Airstream. KOA Dog Friendly Lodge

Vintage Trailer Awning

Our latest camping adventure was in North Carolina at a new KOA dog friendly lodge.
We decided to leave our trailer at home to make the 7 hour drive to NC to see our son. The new KOA lodge had a bunk bed room, a queen bed room and a large futon in the central living area. There was a table for four, a kitchenette, a flat screen TV and a full bathroom plus central heat. It wasn't exactly roughing it! Even though it was only 32 degrees, we had fun cooking outside at the grill provided and having a fire in the fire pit. We set off the smoke alarm inside twice. The first morning the coffee pot and the toaster made it chirp, the next day the waffle iron made it blare. I ended up cooking waffles on the porch in my PJ's and a down coat! Obviously, the smoke alarms needed to be moved to the opposite side of the lodge. The management was grateful that we informed them of the smoke alarm problem and were going to correct it immediately. The lodges have been a big hit so they are adding five more. There was a nice long wooded trail and a small dog park that Dutch Puppy enjoyed too. We will definitely return again.

The "Shades of the Past" car show is also going on,that weekend,in nearby Pigeon Forge,TN.It will be so exciting,to see all of the awesome vintage cars and vintage travel trailers in the local area. I will be bringing along a few,vintage type,rope and pole awnings,for the swap meet,on Saturday,at the vintage trailer rally. AAA's RV Plus Emergency Roadside Assistance

We experienced our first major tire blowout, on our 25' dual axle vintage Avion camper, coming home from our camping trip in Cherokee NC. As it occurred, our 4000 pound vintage trailer clanked, quivered, and shook, but never fishtailed out of control.
Thanks to my husband's extraordinary driving skills, the vintage RV was safely maneuvered over, onto the shoulder of the road. However, our Avion continued to rock and sway, as four lanes of high speed traffic zoomed past us. We were just north of Atlanta on I 985. I did not want my husband to even attempt to change the blown out tire, under these treacherous conditions. It was such a relief knowing we had previously purchased AAA's RV Plus Emergency Roadside Assistance policy. AAA's phone number was listed first in my cell phone, so it was very easy and convenient to contact them. With emergency lights flashing, not one, but two large flat bed tow trucks arrived within thirty minutes. A few minutes later, they had efficiently replaced the blown out tire, with our new spare tire, and then proceeded to help safely return us back out into the continuous flow of heavy traffic. AAA came promptly to our rescue, and we truly appreciated the quality service, safety and protection they provided for us.

Vintage Trailer Awning with Period Correct Design

First,I purchased a 13-foot vintage camper,a Canned Ham called a Tag-A-Long. This vintage trailer had a 9-foot awning rail,but not a rope and pole awning. In my ebay search for a vintage awning,I was lucky enough to find an original vintage rope and pole awning,that was period appropriate and exactly the right size. However,once it arrived, I was disappointed at the tattered,faded condition it was in. The decision was made to copy the design and make myself a replica,using Sunbrella Marine Grade Fabric instead of heavy canvas. I used all technologically advanced weather resistant materials,yet stayed true to the period correct vintage awning design. Vintage Camper Rally at Misty River TN

Misty River RV Park in TN was the location of the first vintage trailer rally thatI have ever attended. I recently had some business cards printed, so I was able to distribute them during the tour of vintage trailers. Campers were able to view the vintage look awnings I had on display and ask questions about the fabric and the construction.
