The arched awnings, have extra height underneath and incline for rain run off. The shock poles make the awning taut, so they are not staked out tightly. For this reason, vendors are able to set up on hard-packed soil or even concrete, and just use weighted tie-down lines, to keep the wind from flipping the arched awning. Some people use milk jugs filled with water, or other more creative ideas like vintage thermos, vintage cooler, vintage picnic baskets, to give you some idea.
